civil war gifts
One of the original customs of giving gold coins during a wedding ceremony was in Spain, known as “The Thirteen Gold Coins Ceremony.” The coins as gifts were placed in an ornate box or tray signifying the groom’s willingness to support his bride. Presented first to the minister, who then counts them out, placing them in the hands of the groom at the altar. The minister demonstrates that each coin represents a different value the couple desires to share between themselves: love, harmony, cooperation, commitment, peace, happiness, trust, respect, caring, wisdom, joy, wholeness and nurturing. The bride and groom exchange vows on these values. Then the groom pours the coins into the bride’s cupped hands.

No Irish marriage is complete without passing a coin between the groom and bride. The groom hands a new silver coin to his bride and says, “I give you this as a token of all I possess.” The coin is kept as a memento symbolizing the celebratory event. It will be a family keepsake. When the bride has children she will pass the coin to her eldest son on his wedding day and he will pass it to his bride; the tradition repeats itself.
Our pocket gift box would be a perfect way to memorialize the coin. A new plaque could be lightly pasted on top of the old plaque. This will ensure that the coin will not be spent in an Irish pub.
Scottish
On the morning of the wedding day, a six pence coin is placed in the shoe of the bride to bring her good luck. When the bride gets into the car on the way to the church, the Father of the bride throws coins on the ground for children to collect. This is called the wedding scramble or “warsel.”
